MY HEART TOLD ME TO DO IT
I was recently asked in a workshop why I decided to quit my job and start my own business versus building mindfulness training programs for my employer.
My answer: “My heart told me to, so I did.”
And that’s the truth. I don’t have any other explanation.
Spirit told me I was going to be a healer. God nudged me to take a leap of faith.
The feeling was so strong and the voice so loud, I knew there was no other option. It was time to get out of my comfort zone.
I loved my previous job. I loved it so much that it took me months to get the courage to put in my notice. It’s why when I finally did put in my notice, I cried when I had the conversation with my boss (Yes, this happened. I cried when I put I did it. #NoShame). I respected and admired the leaders and believed in the organization’s mission so much that I stayed on for a few more months while they found a replacement. My colleagues made coming into the office enjoyable, so I go into the office to see them every time I’m in Chicago.
I’d started weekly guided meditations for my colleagues, and my boss was even open to me leading other mindfulness training sessions at the organization.
It was meaningful work for me, but I knew it was time to move on. I needed to follow this calling. My heart’s calling.
There is absolutely no coincidence that I started working for a healthcare technology startup when I did - it was at the peak of when all this “health stuff” was unfolding.
It’s been synchronistic that every job I’ve had up until now has in some way given me the experience and knowledge I’ll use as I’m building my own successful business.
So far, I still believe this decision was the right one :)
When I started my Primordial Sound Meditation Teacher Training at the Chopra Center, I had no idea what I was going to do with my certification. It simply “felt right” for me to say YES. I figured, if anything, it was a gift to myself since I was turning 30 that year.
It’s been almost a year since I finished the Teacher Training and I have to admit, the gift of completing this program was worth every penny. I’ve grown personally and professionally in more ways than I could have ever imagined.
The combination of my own personal mindfulness journey, and my studies have me firmly believing we HAVE to be thinking about our health holistically. For me, that means not only taking care of our body, our physical health, but also our mental and spiritual health.
Anyone, and I mean anyone, can benefit from studying this ancient wisdom and having a daily meditation practice. This knowledge is life changing!
It doesn’t matter if you’re a teacher, police officer, lawyer, fitness instructor, therapist, social worker, life coach, barista, server, or stay at home parent (literally any profession), you’ll find ways to incorporate these teachings into your life.
The gift of this ancient wisdom has brought me inner peace. I’m happier and feel more joy, even when things appear mundane. I live with more wonder and awe. The unknown doesn’t seem as dark and scary as I once made it out to be. And I’m doing a much better job at living in the present moment. Synchronicities are much more common. My body isn’t going into fight or flight as often due to stress. My creative juices are on fire these days. And what started as a practice to help me manage stress, has deepened my spirituality and connection with God.
Since I began these studies, I’ve realized I’m able to connect more deeply with myself and others. And when fear creeps in, meditation has given me the confidence to say YES to this fear which once held me back.
These studies have made me a better leader, friend, sibling and daughter. Heck, I will go as far to even say I’m a better human being in general because of these studies!
And the beauty in all of this now that I’m teaching is how my students have changed my life.
Every question they’ve asked, thank you they’ve said, every word of encouragement and support they’ve offered, every hug, every conversation, every giggle we’ve shared, have and are changing my life. This has been one of the most beautiful and rewarding gifts I’ve received on this journey.
There are some of you who’ve thought about beginning your journey with meditation, but aren’t sure how to get started. Others have already started, but might be looking to take it to the next level. And some of you might not have even thought about meditation until reading this post.
