MUSIC FEEDS MY SOUL

I love listening to music, and I love dancing to it even more. If you’ve been to a wedding with me, you’re bound to have seen me tearing it up on the dance floor. Literally.

Just to give you an idea of what I mean by “tearing it up.” Here are some photos of what I look like when I’m really really really feelin’ a song. These are from my friend’s wedding in Chicago this past June.

Kinda embarrassing, but they really capture the emotions I feel when I'm dancing.

Dancing my heart out puts me in a good mood, especially when one of my favorite songs comes on. I’m a firm believer that shaking “yo thang” to the sound of a good beat totally has the power to shift your state of mind. It’s a super simple trick and works for me every time.

I was in a coaching program 2 years ago which focused on learning to shift your mindset in order to fulfill your desires. One of the sessions was about music and how the lyrics in songs subconsciously have an effect on us. I had never really thought too much about the importance of listening to music which feeds my soul until this specific coaching session, but it totally makes sense to me now.

It seems like so many songs nowadays have lyrics that are quite honestly garbage to my ears, but I’ll admit, I still love me some Justin Bieber and Daddy Yankee every once in a while.

Now hear me out because I'm not trying to imply that all Justin Bieber and Daddy Yankee music is garbage. However, I don’t listen to these types of songs for the lyrics. I listen to them for the beat that gets my booty going because this movement has the power to shift my state of mind.

So my message today is simply this. Be mindful of the music you’re choosing to listen to. Lyrics are a bunch of words and the words we say to ourselves have a major effect on our subconscious, whether they’re in conversation or sung in a song. The subconscious doesn’t go, “Oh, this is a song so lets filter this garbage out.”

It doesn’t work this way. It registers no difference between conversation and a song. Words are words to our subconscious mind whether we’re talking to ourselves (we all do this!), are in conversation with someone else or singing along to lyrics.

My challenge for you today is to try listening to more music which motivates you to reach new heights and has the power to change your state of mind, with both a beat that makes you shake “what yo mamma gave you” and has positive lyrics.

And in the spirit of talking about song lyrics, I wanted to share this song I recently discovered on Spotify called In Dreams by Jai Jagdeesh. Now this song doesn’t get my booty shaking like some good ole’ Whitney Houston, but it feeds my soul and gives me chills every time I hear it (Thank you Spotify for your smart “songs you might like” algorithm. One example of how sharing personal data can be a positive thing 😀).

Take a look at the lyrics and then listen to the song after reading this post.

In Dreams by Jai Jagdeesh

Know you are loved
Rest in peace
Dream your sweet dreams

'Til your soul is released

Beloved Child
My heart is yours
Beloved Child
Go out and open doors
With your love
With your faith
With your compassion
With your grace
Oh, with your grace

Beloved Child
You are the light of the world
Beloved Child
Go out, spread light to the world
Be strong, be kind, be brave
Know your mind
Know that you’re divine
Know that it's alright to be afraid

The combination of the artist’s voice, the meaning behind the lyrics and the tune have me obsessing over this song! It’s resonating with me so strongly as this year’s travel adventures are coming to an end and I’m returning home to focus on building this business.

Building a business comes with both fear and excitement, but this song motivates me to keep on creating and building, while bringing me peace of mind that I’ll be divinely guided as I boogie my way into this next chapter of life.

What songs fill your soul these days? Feel free to share them on the Something Beauitful Facebook page or send them to me so I can share them with our community.

May you discover peace of mind and pure joy when you “boogie down” today and always. Much love!
